Living in an Esher-esque World: Smoking and Sexual Purity

I was driving down the road the other day with my wife sitting in the passenger seat. There was a beat up red pickup truck in front of us with a black beat up bumper sticker. As we pulled up to a stop light and my wife leaned forward trying to make out the battered text. "Well at least I can still smoke in my car" the sticker read. We chuckled and noted that it is kind of sad that people don't realize that their actions affect others and that we were happy that people couldn't smoke in restaurants and places of that nature.

Then something dawned on me. We regulate wear people are allowed to smoke cigarettes, but allow all sorts of lewd photographs and advertisements flood the public arena. We will send the smokers packing, but those who want to shove pornography and sexual impurity down our throats are welcomed with open arms. While this abundance of lasciviousness is killing marriages, tearing apart families, polluting the minds of the next generations, and turning people into objects and robbing them of their value as human beings we are going to focus our attention on where people light up.

I am so grateful that I do not have to deal with someone else's action polluting my lungs, but I think I might trade that to be able to go to Walmart and not see women's entire anatomy or to be able to check the sports scores without cleavage being shoved in my face. It amazes me that we live in a culture that will take a stand on a certain issue and totally disregard the principle it is built on when it come to purity and modesty. It makes little sense to me. But, at least as our children's minds are being corrupted they won't have to inhale second hand smoke.
